Yup, Celiac's.

Today I was diagnosed with Celiac's disease.  I have always known there was something wrong when I would eat foods with rye, wheat, or barley in them.  I never felt well afterward and I am just so happy that I can move forward beyond wondering what was wrong.  For the last year, I have been my own advocate at the doctor.   He finally listened.

Time to start a new chapter of my life.  One where I will feel better and finally heal my digestive system, more specifically, my lower intestines.

Graduation

I've decided (against my own will) to walk in the commencement ceremony to seal up the whole master's degree thing.  I've also decided (against my better judgement) to have an open house type party with family and friends to celebrate the event.  I have a bad feeling about this.   I just don't want  to be disappointed by a poor turn out.  I don't know?  Maybe I expect too much from others.

As my buddies here probably noticed, I get quiet.  The reason I get quiet is because of depression.  I just tend to inwardly implode into myself any time that it hits.  I fight it off with nutrition and exercise, so if I get quiet on here, please send me a message telling me to get my fat butt off the couch and exercise so I feel better.    I've been walking Churchill for 30-40 minutes a day.  It's good for both he and I, and I love the quality time with my buddy.   So, for now, depression abated.

Iconic losses.

This past week, heaven has sent for three American icons in the entertainment business.   Like many, I was very saddened of the deaths Ed McMahon, Farrah, and MJ.  The contributions they make that enrich our lives improves our quality of life.   As a child, I stayed up to watch Johnny Carson and remember fondly the contributions that Ed McMahon made to that show.  Farrah was a trifecta of beauty, brains, and brawn.   Simply gorgeous and a gifted business woman.  She has given the world much from her generosity of sharing her experiences with cancer. MJ, well, he has simply been the epitome of success in the music industry.  He is proof that being a celebrity is not always a good thing, and his torture is now over and I hope he gets some peace in death because he did not see any in life.

One thing that came to mind after hearing of MJ's death was, "I wonder who the media will pick on now?"   Ed, Farrah, and MJ were all targets of sensationalistic media fodder.  They were made to be laughing stocks and, in the case of MJ, sexual predators.   It is only a reminder of the disintegration of the media and how pathetic that some outlets have become.  It's just sad.  It has been nice to see the media saying good things about all three of these public figures in death.   Just a shame that could not have offered them the same respect in life.

Ed, Farrah, and MJ. . you will be missed.

Overcoming disappointment

Its job hunting season for me.  So far, I've had 5 interviews, and 5 rejections. . two this week alone.    The most recent rejection came today.  I was very disappointed because I really, really wanted this job.   This afternoon, I visited my local ROE  (Regional Office of Education) to re-register my certificate for the next four years.  The secretary in the office asked me questions about my further schooling after I received my initial certificate.  Once I told her that I was finishing my graduate program, she said, "No district is going to hire you with a master's degree."  This further deflated me into feeling like I had no hope.  It was truly the last thing I needed to hear.   So, from here on out, its back to square one.  I've never been the kind to let something beat me when the chips are down.  I'm picking up the pieces and working towards finding a job.  I can't give up on myself.

Kick me. . I deserve it

I have been scarce with my blog lately and I apologize.  Life has been good, but there have been some negative aspects going on and I did not care to share because I would like to keep this a positive place.  Despite all this, I try to remember that there is always something positive going on in life. . sometimes it is harder to find. . but positives are always there.

I want to send a shout of to my granddaddy bear Ken for his remission on cancer.  His strength and ability to fight and endure the grips of cancer and win are truly an inspiration.  I am so proud of him and am truly blessed to have corresponded with him over the past 9-10 years.

I have begun my last graduate class before I graduate with my master's degree in special education in August.  Graduation is August 8 and I have decided to walk.  I am also currently looking for a new teaching job for the next school year.  I have been interviewing, but so far no fit yet.  The summer is still young and I have faith.

I will try do better at posting more here on the LJ and keep everyone on the view from my padded room here.

It's been rather wet here this week.
Snow
[info]mafbear
This past week has been very wet here.   Here are the rainfall my rain gauge reported from the past week.  I am very thankful to have a 12" gauge.

Sunday:  1.05 inches

Monday:  11.68 inches (between 6-6:30 pm, we received 1.77 inches)  Lots of flash flooding, very destructive in some parts of town)

Tuesday: 1.10 inches

Wednesday:  3.47 inches

Thursday:  0.53 inches

Friday:  0.00 (so far)

That is 17.83 inches of rain this week.  For the month I am at 20.89 inches.    Thankfully, there is so damage to the house, although some in town are not so lucky.  I have never seen rain fall like that before in my entire life.  It was like someone took a giant boot and just dumped it on us.  Thankfully, the next few days call for no heavy rain in the next few days.  We definitely need a break.

Recently I began fishing again.  I have a good buddy who likes to go fishing, and for a year we talked about it.  Finally, we have started going fishing.  It took me a few times to get back my casting technique, but I am finally fishing again and it is so nice to get out on the water and enjoy the wildlife.  The blue herrins are so graceful and very interesting to watch (it is currently their mating season).

I had not been fishing since I was a child.  I went with mom and dad Brooksher to Engineer lake and would fish for hours.  It was quality time with the family and I remember it fondly.  At daddy Brooksher's funeral in 2007, I thought of all the good times I had growing up with them.  It was then I decided that I wanted to start fishing again.  The first time I was out fishing, I sat there on the water and thought about daddy Brooksher alot.   I didn't catch any fish my first time out, and that wasn't the point.  When sitting on the banks of the lake and river, I felt daddy B with me.   It was a comforting feeling.  . . . .like he is still with me.

Now, any of my buddies on here up for some fishing?

The link above is very cool story.  Ford made a blind man's dream come true.  The man lost his sight 20 years ago and has dreamed of driving again.  Ford set him loose on a race track with the help of a professional driver to perform acceleration, braking, and skidpad tests.  Kudos to Ford for making a man's dream come true.  Check out the link for more info and some great shots of the event.

Yesterday I worked a half day.  Following work I received a phone call from a good buddy of mine that lives in Pheonix.  He and I are going through a similar path in life right now with similar obstacles and pursuits.   As we were talking, the mail came.  In the mail was my thesis.  I opened it while I had him on the phone.  As I pulled the paper from the manila envelope, I quickly looked for my grade.  It was awesome to share the excitement of getting an "A" on the big project with my good buddy, even if it was just by phone.   I'm glad I got to share that experience with him.  Now, on to more good experiences!  The world is wide open.

Life is good.

Today I had the great opportunity to visit a local elementary school with my Newfoundland dogs to do a presentation.  Churchill and Aggie did a great job with the students.  The students were very excited to have the dogs visiting.  The students were very interested in the dogs and asked many great questions.  It was a wonderful experience to see students excitement about seeing such a large dog.  It was very interesting to see Churchill and Aggie respond to students commands, especially since Churchill and Aggie were almost as tall as some of the students.  Some students asked to hold their leashes, and it was amazing to see the sense of accomplishment when they were walking the dogs.  One student in particular had a breakthrough experience when she asked to hold Aggie's leash.  She was very afraid of her at first, but I told her I would hold the leash with her.  After a minute or so, I dropped the leash and she was walking Aggie herself.  She walked her to the back of the classrom, then back to me and I thanked her for being such a good dog walker, and then I instructed her to tell Aggie she is a good girl.  She patted Aggie on her side and told her she was good, and Aggie kissed her on the nose.  The girl walked back to her seat with a big grin.   This is what education is all about.  A student learned a new skill, on her own, and gained confidence in her ability.  I am so proud of her for facing her fears and overcoming them.

I must say that this day would have never happened without the wondeful people at the River King Newfoundland Club.  I have been given so many opportunities because of my affiliation with the club.   It's pretty cool.

Bowling Shirts with a message at the PWBA Series Showdown

I have been a fan of bowling all my life.  As a kid, it was my sport.  As such, I'm a huge fan of the PBA and PWBA.  This past Sunday, the PWBA Series Showdown was on and featured Wendy MacPherson.  For the telecast, Wendy MacPherson had a custom bowling shirt on that had yellow, green, and red puzzle pieces on it.  The commentators did not mention this, but her shirt showed her support for Autism awareness.  April is Autism Awareness Month and I as happy to see her showing support for a very worthy cause.  Wendy only earned more of my respect for wearing that shirt.

Props to ya Wendy for calling attention to a very worthy cause!

Trace Adkins at the ACM's

I was really impressed with Trace Adkins performance last night at the ACM's.  The song he sang is called "When the Last Shot's Fired", and it was fantastic.  I am unsure as to who wrote it, but the performance of it was amazing with the military choir behind him.  I thought it was a nice tribute for those who fight for our country.   It was especially touching when he turned around, took off his hat, and put it on his heart.   It was an amazing sign of trust and respect that I think we all should feel towards the protectors of our country.

Technology is great. . when it works.
Bib Overalls
[info]mafbear
I will admit to be the type who enjoys reading about the latest technology, especially in cars.  Nothing wows me more than a car that can stop itself when the driver is not paying attention.  Unfortunately, there is another side to technology, and that is complexity and our dependance on it.   This past week, the DSL modem went kaput.  I called my provider and a new one was sent, unfortunately it arrived later than expected.   Once the new modem arrived, the router was not compatible, so a new router had to be purchased and hooked up.  In the process of figuring this out, 4 hours of time was wasted.  So, finally, after 4 days, the internet is back.   The lack of internet stopped som aspects of my life.  It set my problem solving skills in action to work around the lack of access to the information superhighway.  The dependence on technology is a problem, especially involving the internet.  It is very easy to depend on it, but your access to it is very brittle.  Being without it can strand you from being productive.  The lesson learned is to prepare for it to go out at any given time.

Technology is one of the double edge swords in our lives.  It's great when it works, and its troublesome when it doesn't.

The trouble with never
Bib Overalls
[info]mafbear

When I hear someone say, "I will never. . . ."; I always think, "Oh yes you will."

When I was a child, I would frequently say, "I would never. . ." my mother would look at me and say, "Never say never, because you never know what you will do in the future."  I never believed her, but she was right.  I never thought I would ever do some of the things I have done in my life.  It's rather humbling.  It's never a good idea to go against your code of ethics, but I have learned from my mistakes and its humbled me, and hopefully made me a better person.

I guess the trouble with never is that never never works.

GM - Government Motors?
Bib Overalls
[info]mafbear

The takeover of GM by the government makes me a bit nervous.  My eyebrows raised when I learned last night that Obama asked GM CEO Wagoner to retire.  I understand that the company has not been successful.  The problems with GM are very complex.  Here are a few things I have thought regarding the situation:

Many bash the American automakers for continually losing market share.  Back in the 60's, GM had the largest market share of any automaker.  Today, GM has less than a quarter of the total market share.  The reason for this is not necessary  a lack of quality products.  The reason for this is that back in the 1960's there were far fewer automakers in the marketplace than there are today.  The competition in the American marketplace has increased exponentially over the last 40 years.   When people have more choice, the carmakers that have been in the American market the longest experience a marked decline in market share.

The statistical quality of American vehicles is higher than the public perceives.  Consumer Reports, The Wall Street Journal, and "rags" have put down the American automakers due to higher advertising dollars from automakers from Asia.  Unfortunately, the American consumers believe the hype.  Consumer Reports has been the worst offender.  Toyota paid Consumer Reports a large sum of money to tout their vehicles as best buys and tops in reliable.  Consumer Reports AND Toyota were outed in their little scheme.  Consumer Reports then adjusted their ratings once this story broke into the press.  Toyota, of course, did not comment.  Consumer Reports is not a reliable source for information regarding reliability of vehicles.  The best source of information on vehicle reliability is and always will be J.D. Power.    By the way, J.D. Power says the most reliable brand is Buick and Jaguar for 2009.

With Obama asking Wagoner to retire, I wonder if he chose Henderson himself to lead GM into the future.  If so, I scares me to think of GM being run in a puppet regime.  I don't think the government belongs in big business in a free market economy.  I believe that GM should file
for bankruptcy and reorganize themselves into a much smaller company that can be more successful in the future.

It is my hope that the American people realize that to have a strong economy, we must support our economy by purchasing products that are made right here in the U.S.A.  Of course, we have fewer choices for American goods, which makes it far more important for consumers to support goods made by American companies that manufacture products here in the good ol' U.S.A.  Its a tragic situation.  I hope that other Americans see the importance in supporting their country through the purchase of American products.

I am hopeful that GM, Ford, and Chrysler become far more successful in the marketplace than they are currently.  I think that Ford has the best shot right now, but only time will tell.
